Keep Mangakino Beautiful is part of a national organisation called Keep New Zealand Beautiful.  This group has been inexistence since 1995 and has a dedicated, but aging group of enthusiastic members.

The aims of the group are to:

Reduce Litter

The KMB group has assisted with Clean Up New Zealand Week which is held annually, usually in October.  There are also eight sites that are surveyed on a regular basis to see how much litter there is at those sites.

Since 1995 there has been a 40% reduction in the amount of litter at these sites.  By reducing the amount of litter in our streets, berms, and reserves, we are saying that we care about what our town looks like.

Beautification

Various projects which this group has completed:

  • Establishment of the two gardens at the entrance to town
  • Planting of islands at the intersection of Lake Road and Rangatira Drive
  • Planting of trees along the fifty tree straight and three gardens on Rangatira Drive
  • Planting of trees along Lake Road
  • Establishment of gardens and Agapanthus bed around the town centre

Civic Pride

This includes such things as the Garden Competition, Thumbs Up Award, Spud in the Bucket Competition, Graffiti busting project.

Membership

The group meets on the first Friday of each month (excluding December and January) at 1.30pm in the Boardroom of the Council Office in Mangakino.

We have projects we would like to do to add to Mangakino’s pleasant surroundings and we need help to keep these projects looking great.

Some of our members have moved on… some are unable to do the occasional physical part of our work, but have valuable ideas, run raffles, organise stalls and so on… We welcome new members. If you are able to assist in any way at all please phone.
